How lifestyle changes impact fertility

What women don’t know and doctors don’t tell

If simple changes in lifestyle habits increase fertility and chances of getting pregnant, why is it that medical specialists, doctors, and even teachers all over the world don’t tell women more about it?

But let me put it in another way: why should they?

Why should those good and hard-working people invest their time and energy to teach you about the lifestyle habits to increase fertility?

Take one example: a couple goes through a series of unsuccessful fertility treatments. This translates as high costs, covered by their insurance, or not. But this does matter – when it comes to becoming genetic parents, most people are ready to go very far.

Let’s then imagine, at some point, this couple succeeds in getting pregnant naturally. In their fertility clinic, pregnancy gets confirmed by ultrasound, doctors congratulate. They all shake hands and never see each other again.

Are you getting the picture?

Now: am I saying that the medical specialists are deceitful people who don’t want to you to succeed in getting pregnant naturally?

Certainly not.

In fact, all the people I know who have studied medicine have good, carrying, and altruistic personalities. Unfortunately, their working hours are often brutal and, if they run their own practice, often accompanied by huge amounts of administrative work.

So when should these overworked folks find time to attend conferences and read scientific journals?

To tell you how to improve your chances to get pregnant naturally?

In the evening, when they go to their own families?

On the weekend, when many continue working to meet ovulations and the priorities of their patients?

I actually understand them so well, that my husband often jokes and tells my website should be about letting the world know how difficult the lives of medical doctors (and scientific postdocs!) are when they try to  1) help others, 2) keep up with and conduct research, and 3) teach, all in one career.

How to change lifestyle habits to increase fertility and get pregnant

In a nutshell, you and the medical doctors at your fertility clinic have the same goal: to get you pregnant. But the moment you get pregnant naturally (read in my book here on how to improve chances), you are not your clinic’s business any more.

Again, this is not to say that fertility specialists don’t want you to succeed in this way, they simply have different priorities. YOUR nutrition, YOUR supplements, or changing YOUR lifestyle habits to increase fertility are not one of them.

For example, doctors often put a lot of faith in high-tech solutions at their clinics, and with good reason. The pregnancy rates at many clinics are better than natural rates, even in young women. That is definitely something to feel proud of and what only became possible a few decades ago.

Taking advantage of all other options that will boost your chances to get pregnant naturally is entirely your responsibility. If you look for instructions on how to increase chances to naturally get pregnant, you should probably turn to sources like: general practitioners, gynecologists, or naturopathic physicians.

It would be great if, at some point, programs to support changes in life habits management become more broadly available at fertility clinics as well (their resulting obstetrics business would ultimately profit, too), or the information on ways to improve fertility will become more broadly available to women when they are still young; however, for the moment, we still don’t live in that world.

Either naturally or via IVF: you are more likely to get pregnant if you improve the quality of your eggs.
