The egg cell production in the human females begins even before they are born, when about 4-5 million very basic cells known as oocytes accumulate in the just forming ovaries. Most of them gradually waste away and only 1-2 million are left at birth. At puberty a young girl has on the average only 300,000 left – seemingly enough for a lifetime of fertility considering, that only about 400 oocytes mature into ovulating eggs.

However, many thousands of oocytes will never become eggs and exist only to compete or to support the ovulating egg. They will all degenerate. This degeneration happens at a rate of about 1,000 follicles (tiny fluid-filled sacs that contain immature eggs) per month and even more rapidly the closer a women gets to menopause.

In a woman’s teens and twenties a few dozen immature eggs may start to grow each month in order for one to mature and ovulate. But usually in the late thirties and early forties only a few eggs remain to start their growth each month. The eggs, which do not ovulate, will disintegrate each month, a process, which continues even during pregnancy.

The eggs which remain in the ovaries are called “ovarian reserve”. And this advancing, yearly decline in the number of eggs is known as the “age-related decline in ovarian reserve.”

The speed of this progress is slightly different for each woman and cannot be stopped. However, it CAN be slowed down (click on the link to find out how). There is also no medication you can take to “pause” the process and save the eggs for later.
